WM Lewis Group, LLC is named for the late Willard "Wilbur" Milton Lewis, the father of Willard "Chuck" Lewis, our Chairman and Founder who passed in November 1979. The elder Lewis was born in 1910 rural Chambers County Alabama and was reared in Macon, Georgia before returning to his mother's native LaGrange, Georgia. He was a self-made man that brought his construction experience to the small city in 1935. LaGrange was in transition from being agricultural society to an industrialized one. WM Lewis capitalized on his experience in building all types of structures in Macon, Georgia and became a major employer of African Americans in LaGrange. He transformed many of his fellow African Americans from sharecropping laborers into skilled bricklayers, pavers and contractors in their own right. Even schoolteachers that did not receive income during the summer months found work with him to help support their families. He recognized the value of education and encouraged the pursuit of excellence in education in his eight children who gained undergraduate and graduate degrees from schools like Morehouse College, Spelman College, The Medical School of Georgia, Tuskegee University, Simmons College of Boston, Mercer University and others. Chuck Lewis is the youngest and our founder and Chairman.
